Singles sensation Myra Davoudi seems to be setting the tone for the Leland girls tennis team this fall.
Davoudi is undefeated in the No. 1 singles spot in 2003—and the Chargers have come very close to matching that performance.
Leland is in the midst of a great year. The Chargers are undefeated in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League and they are 12-1 for the year. They're only loss was a tough 4-3 decision to Palo Alto in a non-league match early in the season.
Coach Nicole Arnold is pleased with the level of play of her team this year and feels the Chargers "have a good chance to do better than last year in the upcoming Central Coast Secton post-season play."
Leland ran its record to 8-0 in league play last week with 7-0 shutouts of both Silver Creek and Westmont.
Davoudi led the Chargers to the two team victories with wins at No. 1 singles. Davoudi is having a great season after coming back from a serious knee injury that occurred just before CCS play last year.
The rest of the singles group at Leland includes junior Roshie Larijani at No. 2, freshman Roxy Pourmirzaie at No. 3, and sophomore Connie Wang at No. 4.
The doubles team members are junior Melissa Joe and senior Alison Keiley at No. 1, seniors Carla Abi-samra and Judy Yang at No. 2, and seniors Janelle Flores and Rina Parmeshwar at No. 3.
"Our seniors set a great example and provide good leadership," Arnold said.
With the varsity team being mostly seniors, you might think there would be a little concern about success in the future, but the junior varsity team is also undefeated and a "strong team," according to Arnold.
Pioneer, meanwhile, was able to maintain its spot in a two-way tie for first place with Piedmont Hills atop the Santa Teresa Division. The Mustangs squeaked out a 4-3 victory in their match with Independence and then followed that up with a strong 5-2 win over Evergreen later in the week. The wins put the Mustangs at 11-1 in league play.
The Mustangs had to battle hard to come out on top in the Independence match. They were carried to victory by three wins in the singles matches and one win in doubles play.
Misa Tanaka kept her league record perfect with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Kameron Brown prevailed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 and Lianna Wong took care of her opponent with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4. Singles play was rounded out with No. 1 Camille Brown falling 5-7, 2-6 in her match.
The Mustangs needed only one win in doubles play to clinch the match victory and that's exactly what they got. The No. 1 doubles team of Marieke Stulp and Giana Flores suffered their first defeat of the year in league competition, losing 6-4, 4-6, 1-6. The No. 3 doubles team of Shira Strauss and Caroline Tran also lost their match 2-6, 5-7.
That left it up to the No. 2 pair of Justine Kirkeide and Megan Miller, and they came through with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
In their second match of the week, the Mustangs faced Evergreen, which was the only team that had been able to beat them in league play this season. The Mustangs were ready for revenge and pounded out a solid 5-2 win.
The Mustangs swept the singles competition while winning only one of the doubles match-ups. Tanaka moved up to No. 1 singles where she again remained undefeated winning 6-1, 6-0. C. Brown found her new No. 2 spot favorable as she won 6-2, 6-2. K. Brown continued her winning ways at No. 3 with a solid 6-0, 6-0 win. Freshman Wong continued her strong play at No. 4 winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles team of Stulp and Flores regained their winning form with a hard fought win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles suffered defeats with Kirkeide and Miller losing 2-6, 2-6 and Strauss and Tran falling 3-6, 2-6.
Last weekend Pioneer participated in a Santa Teresa Division singles and doubles tournament, a qualifier for Blossom Valley Athletic League post-season play. All eight teams in the division participated and each team entered two singles competitors and one doubles team.
Pioneer had Tanaka play at No. 1 singles and C. Brown play at No. 2 singles. The doubles team consisted of K. Brown and Wong. The Mustangs swept the tournament, taking first place in all three categories.
