Pioneer polo team is living up to new coach's expectations
By Dick Sparrer
Scott Kaubish wasn't expecting a championship this fall from his Pioneer water polo boys water polo team. But he did expect the Mustangs to be winners and to contend for the title in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

And it looks like those Mustangs are living up to his expectations.

Pioneer boasts a 2-2 league record and a 10-9 mark overall as they splash their way through the season for their new head coach.

Kaubish comes over to Pioneer this season after a successful run as the girls coach at Willow Glen. And he came over with high hopes for the Mustangs.

"I anticipated that this enthusiastic team of players would improve throughout the season and begin to attain the respect of other teams in the section," said Kaubish. "This is a building season for us."

The Mustangs were just 3-4 in league play and 4-8 overall a year ago, and they're already improved on that record this season. Pioneer beat Willow Glen 11-4 and Piedmont Hills 17-11 last week to even their league ledger and top the .500 mark in league play.

All-league returner Chance Vermilyea leads the Pioneer attack this fall. The junior is joined by seniors Kyle Zondervan, Kyle Simpson, Chris Emert, Craig Fergus and Alex Manzano and juniors David Grometer, Cole Davis, Doug York, Greg Karis and Ryan Peterson as talented returners for the Mustangs.

Sophomores Kevin Zondervan and David Atala and freshman Kirk Kaubish are new young prospects.

Vermilyea pumped in five goals and Kyle Zondervan tossed in three to lead Pioneer to the 11-4 win over the Rams last week. Emert supported with a couple of goals and Kyle Sakamoto added one.

Vermilyea's seven goals sparked the Mustangs to the 17-11 win over Piedmont Hills. Emert finished with three goals.
