A 17-point fourth quarter outburst sparked Serra to a 31-28 win over Bellarmine last Friday afternoon. The Padres stuck the Bells with their first loss of the 2003 season.
Chris Parrette ran for three touchdowns and Darrin Bragg tossed a 72-yard touchdown pass to Colin Maher to help the Bells open up a 28-7 lead in the third quarter. But the Padres struck for a TD before the end of the third, then scored twice in the fourth quarter to tie it 28-28. A field goal in the final seconds won it for Serra.
The Bells slipped to 5-1 for the year and to 2-1 in the West Catholic Athletic League with the loss. Serra is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
St. Francis leads the WCAL with a 4-0 record (7-1 overall) and Valley Christian (2-1 in league, 6-1 overall) shares second with Serra and Bellarmine.
The Bells will try to get back on the winning track this week when they face Mitty on Oct. 31, 7:30 p.m., at San Jose City College.
