It was a big win for Linfield College football team, and it was a big game for San Jose's Tony Zimmer.
In fact, it was a big enough game for Zimmer that the 1996 Leland High School graduate won Northwest Conference Player of the Week honors for his efforts.
Zimmer returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown, intercepted a pass and got in on seven tackles to help Linfield, a Division III college in McMinnville, Ore., to a lopsided 55-0 win over Lewis & Clark College. The victory was the 23rd straight for the Wildcats.
Zimmer returned the fumble 35 yards for a Linfield touchdown in the win that clinched a 48th consecutive winning season for the Cats. Three of his seven tackles were unassisted.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pound senior rover has been in on 30 tackles this season for the Wildcats, 13 of them unassisted. The fumble recovery was his first of the season, though he's forced a fumble. And the interception was also his first of the year, though he's broken up a couple of passes.
Linfield is now 7-0 for the season and 3-0 in the Northwest Conference, the longest continuous win string in the history of college football. Linfield's last losing season was 1955.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 3 among NCAA Division III schools.
