Zac Attack: Advancing the ball forward for Leland in water polo action against Mt. Pleasant is scoring sensation Zac Monsees. The senior star scored five goals in the 21-6 win over the Cardinals.
Chargers swamp Pirates, Cards; move into tourney

From the beginning, Leland boys water polo coach Mike Monsees had expected Mt. Pleasant to be the team to beat if his Chargers hoped to win the title in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

As it turned out, though, when the Chargers and Cardinals matched up in a game to decide the league championship last week, it was no contest—just as it's been all year for Leland in league play.

The Chargers swamped the Cards 21-6 two days after crushing Piedmont Hills 21-3. The two wins left Leland 7-0 in the division and 23-7 for the year heading into the league tournament.

Leland has already won the regular season title, now the Chargers expect to take the league tournament crown this week. Leland drew a first-round bye in the tourney, but will play in the semifinals on Nov. 7, 6 p.m., and will likely advance to the finals on Nov. 8, 1:30 p.m. The BVAL tournament will be played at Independence.

From there it's off to the Central Coast Section playoffs for Leland, and Monsees has high hopes for his squad.

"We should be seeded in the top four in Division I for sure," he said. "That will give us a pretty good draw for the first round anyway."

The CCS seeding meeting is set for Nov. 9.

Mike Walter poured in seven goals and Zac Monsees pitched in five to lead the Chargers to the lopsided win over Mt. Pleasant last week. Trevor Foote supported with four goals and Nick Beene added three.

"[Foote and Beene] have been real keys to our offense," said the Leland coach.

And leading the defense has been senior goalkeeper Ryan Rodrigues.

"He's doing a great job," said Monsees of Rodrigues. "He's a great athlete. He moves real quickly and passes the ball accurately."

Leland opened play last week with the 21-3 win over Piedmont Hills. Monsees sat that one out, and it was Beene leading all scorers with four goals. Foote and Walters had three goals apiece.

Pioneer, meanwhile, split in BVAL play last week before winning two of three games in the Monta Vista Tournament.

Seven different players scored in Pioneer's 7-1 win over Silver Creek last week, but the Mustangs had opened the week by dropping a 10-8 heartbreaker to Independence.

Chance Vermilyea drilled three goals and Chris Emert had two, but the Mustangs lost to the 76ers. Kyle Zondervan, Doug York and Anthony Morlino also scored for Pioneers.

Goals by Zondervan, Kyle Simpson, Craig Fergus, Emert, Alex Manzano, John LoFranco and Ryan Johnson all scored for Pioneer in the win over the Raiders.

Pioneer opened the Monta Vista Tournament with a 14-7 loss to Valley Christian, but came back to beat Santa Clara 11-5 and Carmel 9-8 to improve its season record to 14-11.

Vermilyea, Zondervan and Kirk Kaubish scored two goals each and Simpson, York and Cole Davis added a goal each in the win over Carmel.

Zondervan and David Atala fired in three goals apiece to lead the Mustangs to the win over Santa Clara. Kyle Zondervan, Simpson, Fergus, Emert and Vermilyea also scored in the win.

Vermilyea scored four goals, but it wasn't enough to lead the Mustangs to a win over Valley Christian. Zondervan, Kaubish and Greg Karis also scored for Pioneer.
