The Pioneer boys cross country team outran Santa Teresa by a single point last week to clinch the dual meet championship in the Blossom Valley Athletic League's Santa Teresa Division.
The Mustangs edged the Saints 27-28 in the battle of the division's two unbeaten teams. Pioneer ended up 6-0 in dual meet action with Santa Teresa a close second at 5-1.
Santa Teresa defeated Branham 24-31 the same day. The Bruins ended up 2-4 in the division and in fifth place.
In individual competition, a Santa Teresa runner finished first in the pack of BVAL runners, but Pioneer placed four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15 while the Saints could get just three runners in the top 10.
Sean Lopes starred for the Mustangs in the important race. He was second overall in 16:35, just nine seconds off the pace set by the winner on the 2.95mile Alum Rock Park course.
Jeff Higashi was fourth for the Mustangs in 16:47 with Ken Rose sixth in 17:10 and Steven Delay eighth in 17:14. Ken Earl rounded out the top five for Pioneers, running 13th in 17:46.
Jason Hatakeyama was the top Branham finisher in the race. He ended up 12th overall in 17:32.
In girls competition in the Santa Teresa Division, Branham won two of six meets to finish in fifth place. Pioneer was winless at 0-6.
