Silicon Valley Reads selects 'Fahrenheit 451'
A 50-year-old classic with amazingly relevant themes for today has been selected as the 2004 Silicon Valley Reads book.

In February, students and adults in Santa Clara County will be encouraged to read and discuss Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel, Fahrenheit 451, which explores censorship, book burning and humanity's quest for knowledge.

The Silicon Valley Reads program is sponsored by the Santa Clara County Office of Education and the San Jose Public Library Foundation. Multiple discussion groups and other activities will be scheduled at locations throughout Silicon Valley, including schools, libraries and bookstores.

"Lively discussion, plus encouraging a love of reading and an appreciation for literature, is what Silicon Valley Reads is all about," said San Jose City Librarian Jane Light.

In August, residents were invited to nominate books for the 2004 program, and in October, they were asked to vote on one of three nominees.

More than 2,000 votes were cast online or in ballot boxes at local schools, libraries and bookstores. The other two nominees were Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende and Life of Pi by Yann Martel.

More information about the program is available at www.siliconvalleyreads.org.
