The Bellarmine water polo team can only put as many players in the water as any other team. It just seems like they have more.
At least, that's the way it seemed to Leland when the Chargers met up with the Bells in the Central Coast Section Division I championship game on Nov. 22.
"It was a real physical game, and we just felt like we were outnumbered a bit," said Leland coach Mike Monsees after the game. "It felt like they had seven players and we only had six."
It wasn't that the Bells slipped an extra player into the water, it's just the way it seemed as they rolled to a 14-5 win over Leland in the title game.
With the win, the Bells won the CCS championship and finished the year with a 33-2 record. Leland ended up second and posted an impressive 25-8 mark.
"It was a terrific season," said Monsees. "We won two tournaments and finished second in two tournaments. And finishing second in CCS Division I is an excellent finish."
Bellarmine did a good job of slowing down the normally high-scoring Zac Monsees in the title game. Monsees was held to just two goals in the finals.
"They either had him double teamed or triple teamed the whole game," said the Leland coach of his son and star player.
Trevor Foote also tossed in two goals for Leland in the title game and Mike Walters added a goal.
Bellarmine was led by Mike Hayes, who poured in five goals in the win. Chris Talbott and Scott Cruikshank supported with three goals apiece.
The Bells took control of the game early, jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the first period and an 11-3 lead by the half. They coasted from there to the win.
The Bells had beaten Aragon 14-9 in the semifinals to move into the title game.
Leland earned its title game berth with a tight 10-7 win over Live Oak.
Like Bellarmine, the Acorns tried to take Monsees out of the Leland offense, but they weren't counting on Walters taking over in the final period.
"They were double teaming Zac pretty heavily," said the Leland coach. "But Mike stepped up and scored four goals in the fourth period. He did a great job."
Monsees led the Chargers with five goals and Walters supported with four, all of them coming in the final period when Leland topped Live Oak 4-2 to clinch the 10-7 win. Foote also scored in the win.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Rodrigues was "very consistent" for Leland in the win. "He's a very good goalie," said Monsees.
The clubs were locked in a 1-1 tie after a period, but Leland took a 4-3 edge by intermission. The teams matched two goals in the third period to enter the final quarter with Leland up just 6-5. But the Chargers pulled away on Walters' four goals.
"Live Oak was a good game," said Monsees.
It was Leland's third win over Live Oak this season. The Chargers had beaten the Acorns in overtime the first time they met, then "beat them soundly" in the finals of the Live Oak Tournament.
