Chargers fall to Monarchs in CCS volleyball semifinals

It was the semifinals of the Central Coast Section Division II girls volleyball playoffs, and Leland was up against its biggest challenge of the season.

The Chargers were faced with playing the powerful and talented Archbishop Mitty Monarchs. And in the end, the Monarchs proved to be just too much for the Chargers to handle. Mitty advanced to the finals by taking the match 25-11, 25-11, 25-14. Mitty went on to defeat Los Gatos to win the CCS Division II championship.

"Mitty has a national ranking—probably in the top 10 in the nation—and will most likely be the No. 1 seed in the NorCal tournament," said Leland coach Chris Hansen. "They are very talented and a level above us."

"I felt that we played to the best of our ability and that's all we can expect," added Hansen. "Our girls went in thinking they could win and never gave up. I'm proud of the way they went after it."

The Chargers played tough defense, led by senior Alaina Walker, and came up with dig after dig defending the taller and more powerful Monarch hitters. But Leland simply ran out of steam in the end.

Senior Briana Scala closed out her career by once again leading the Chargers in kills with eight. "It was tough for Bri to make it happen when at only 5-foot-10 she was going up against a 6-foot-3 blocker," said Hansen.

There was one particular bright moment in the match that Hansen described. "Christy Gillick made one play that everyone in the gym noticed. She attacked the ball on the net when the ball was actually on our side of the net and should have been stuffed by their 6-foot-3 middle blocker, but Christy got it past her for a kill. It was awesome!" Gillick is only 5-foot-5.

In addition to Scala and Walker, the Chargers saw seniors Sally Hahn and Becky Tremann close out their Leland careers as well.

"We are super proud of the girls and they had a great season," said Hansen, whose Chargers finished at 26-4. "We hope they feel as good about themselves as the coaching staff does about them."
