AVYSL sends recreational teams into jamborees

The weather wasn't great, but it did little to dampen the spirits of the youngsters who took part in the Almaden Valley Youth Soccer League jamboree held in early November at Castillero Middle School and Williams School.

There were 40 teams on the four fields at Castillero competing in the recreational division jamboree for boys and girls in the under 8 age group—26 teams representing 305 boys, and 14 teams representing 160 girls.

Play began in chilly conditions at 8:30 a.m. and lasted until dusk at 4:30 p.m.

"Each participant received a medal acknowledging the fact that they played the jamboree," said Tom Geraghty, AVYSL boys under 8 coordinator. "The teams were slotted by regular season performance to make the games fairly balanced and for the kids to go out on a winning note."

The boys teams that competed included the Bombers, Vipers, Rockets, Strikers, Raptors, Rapids, Tornados, Earthquakes, Fireballs, Sharpshooters, Stormtroopers, Coyotes, Jets, Clippers, Titans, Lasers, Lightning, Thunder, Sabercats, Pythons, Eagles, Sharks, Inferno, Jaguars, Tigers and Scorpions.

The girls teams were the Comets, Sharks, Angels, Unicorns, Strikers, Dangerous Divas, Quicksilver, Lightning Bolts, Shooting Stars, Blast, Cheetahs, Dolphins, Soccer Bunnies, and the Soccer Angels.

"Everyone had a good time and the games were played with the help of the excellent referee crew provided by the AVYSL," added Geraghty.

At Williams, there were 22 under 6 boys teams and 12 under 6 girls teams involved in jamboree competition.

"Each team, comprised of about eight players, played two matches against teams with similar records," said Ron Blumstein, AVYSL recreational league director. "In total, about 300 kids participated."

Boys teams in competition included the Gators, Hornets, Tigers, Kicks, Little Big Dogs, Rockets, Dragons, Blackhawks, Sharks, Stormtroopers, Sharp Shooters, Strikers, Cheetahs, Avalanche, Raptors, Coyotes, Shooting Stars, Stingrays, Kickers, Earthquakes, Space Rangers and Energy.

Girls teams were the Fireballs, Little Kickers, Ladybugs, Dolphins, Mermaids, Stars, Fireflies, Unicorns, Rattlers, Angels, Thunderbolts and Chicklets.

"These jamborees provide a fun and exciting way for the non-traveling teams in the league to wrap up the season by playing two games on this day," said Blumstein.

The AVYSL recreational season runs from September through November.

"The recreational program offers girls and boys between the ages of 4 and 18 a great opportunity to develop athletic skills and build confidence and self esteem," added Blumstein. "The program focuses on skill development and participation."
