Valerie Niles is a keeper. And no one knows that better than the coaches and players on the girls field hockey team at Branham High School.
The senior goalkeeper was a key player in Branham's winning season in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this fall--such a key player, in fact, that she was selected the division's Most Valuable Player when the coaches gathered to select their all-league team for 2003.
Niles was one of two Branham players to claim special honors on the all-league list. Forward Lauren Jenness was named the Junior of the Year on the dream team. Branham's Kristi Garrison was selected as the division's Coach of the Year.
The Bruins were 5-6-4 overall in the 2003 season, but all five of those wins came in league play as they rolled to a 5-3-4 record to finish in third place behind Westmont (12-0-3) and University (8-2-2).
Niles and Jenness were two of the six Branham players selected to the all-league list. Senior forward Deserey Castillo and senior center forward Ann Dinsmour won all-league first team honors and junior forward Kristina Chang and sophomore center back Letricia Soto won places on the all-league second team.
