Bells roll to WCAL title, ready for CCS
By Dick Sparrer
Tim Kerr spent so much time sitting in the chair at matside, it almost seemed like his Bellarmine Bells were involved in a West Catholic Athletic League dual match.

They weren't ... the Bells were competing in the WCAL wrestling finals. It just looked like a dual match because Bellarmine wrestlers were on the mat for 11 of those championship bouts.

It looked like Bellarmine against the rest of the WCAL. Well, maybe it was ... and the Bells won.

Five individual champions led the Bells to the team title at the finals, running up 238 team points to 221 for runner-up St. Francis. And now the team that took the dual match championship with a 6-0 record will try to add another prize to its list of 200304 accomplishments.

Bellarmine has qualified 14 wrestlers for the Central Coast Section tournament set for Feb. 2021 at Independence High School in East San Jose. And the Bells figure to be title contenders alongside Gilroy and Los Gatos—all three teams with a qualifier in every weight class.

Daniel Summers and Moses Guillardo lead the Bells into the CCS tourney. Summers, a league champ at 112 pounds, and Guillardo, a WCAL champion at 119, are each seeded No. 2 in their respective weight classes heading into the weekend competition.

Mitch Penrod (103), Scott Rodehorst (135) and Pat Gillick (145) were other league champions who now move on to the section level for the Bells.

Scott Cuzner (125), John Swart (130), Eric Cetinich (140), Andrew Power (152), Nick Calais (171) and Tyler Anthony (275) each made it to the championship round at the WCAL tourney, and all six finished second for Bellarmine—good for CCS berths.

Finishing fourth for the Bells at the league finals and qualifying for CCS were Andrew Haas (160), John Wenstrand (189) and Doug Mahoney (215).

BVAL qualifiers

A solid corps of local wrestlers from schools in the Blossom Valley Athletic League have also qualified for the CCS tournament this weekend.

Jeff Terry, a third-place finisher at 215 pounds at the league tourney, will head up a contingent of three Pioneer wrestlers heading to CCS. Nick Esposito (160) and Armando Apolinar (275) will also make the trip to Independence this weekend.

Leland's Kris Pinula (130) is also a CCS qualifier along with Branham's Eric Cutshaw (145) and Jace Guibor (160).
