It promised be a thriller when the Leland boys volleyball team traveled across town to face Willow Glen in a match in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
The Chargers and Rams kept their promise.
Leland battled from behind to pull out a thrilling 23-25, 25-17, 15-25, 25-18, 15-10 victory over Willow Glen in the battle between the division's two undefeated teams.
Senior middle blocker Derrick Truong led the Chargers at the net with 11 kills as Leland fought back from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two games and claim the win in the annual "Tiki Match."
The Tiki Trophy is awarded each year to the winner of the Leland-Willow Glen match. The award, created by Rams coach Jef Wind in 2004, was in the hands of the Rams, but the Chargers stole it away with their impressive victory.
"The match was as intense a match as I've been a part of in my four years as varsity coach at Leland," said Jason Hilbert. "The Willow Glen crowd is amazing; they're the personification of thunder. Simply the best crowd support in the Central Coast Section."
Tommy Phan and Scott Lucas supported Truong's effort with 11 kills apiece, and Sam Lee had nine.
"It was a total team effort and showed that the guys had a lot of heart and believed in each other the entire match," added Hilbert. "The win puts us in a position to lead rather than chase for the second half of the league season."
But the Tiki win wasn't Leland's only impressive victory last week. The Chargers also turned back Leigh 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 to push their division-leading record to 7-0 and their season mark to 12-5.
Leading the Chargers to the win over Leigh was, appropriately enough, Leland's very own Lee--senior outside hitter Sam Lee, who had 13 kills in the three-game match.
"He played a great match," said Hilbert of Lee, a team captain.
The loss dropped Leigh to 7-2 in the division. The Longhorns share second place with Willow Glen, who were upset by Westmont after losing to Leland last week.
Leland was to take its perfect league record back on the floor against Gunderson on Tuesday and will host Prospect on April 14, 6 p.m., before competing in the Willow Glen Tournament on Saturday. The Chargers will be back in league action at Oak Grove on April 19, 6 p.m.
In other Mt. Hamilton Division play last week, Pioneer split a pair of matches, falling to Prospect before knocking off Gunderson.
The Mustangs lost 25-17, 25-15, 25-23 to the Panthers to open the week, setting up a battle of the division's two winless teams later in the week--Pioneer versus Gunderson.
The Mustangs, though, are winless no longer. Nolan Rak hammered home a team-high 10 kills to lead Pioneer to a 25-13, 25-9, 25-17 win over the Grizzlies. The Mustangs are now 1-6 in the division and 1-10 for the year.
Branham, meanwhile, slipped to 1-7 in the division and to 9-13 for the year with three losses last week.
The Bruins lost to Westmont in three straight, before losing to Leigh and Oak Grove in five games.
