High school baseball games normally last seven innings, unless you're the Pioneer Mustangs and you're playing the Lincoln Lions. Pioneer needed only five innings to beat the Lions 13-3 on April 7.
The Mustangs' big inning came in the bottom of the second when they scored seven runs on six hits. Michael Schulz opened the frame with a line drive base hit to left, and Justin Kaufmann drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs.
Andrew Schulz smashed a single to load the bases before Zane Bailey grounded out to the second baseman, allowing M. Schulz to score. With two runners in scoring position, Steve Matos ripped a single to drive in both runners, but was caught trying to stretch the hit into a double.
With two outs, Shaun Souza hit a flare over first base and Eddie Hsieh reached on a ball booted by the second baseman. Danny Ventura doubled over the center fielder's head to score both runs and Brent Osborn reached on another error by the second baseman to put two runners on again. M. Schulz returned to the plate and lined a base hit through the middle to score Ventura. Kaufmann reached on an error by the third baseman that scored Osborn before the inning ended.
While Lincoln's defense faltered in the game, Pioneer's was solid.
"Our defense has been really consistent," said Pioneer head coach Jake Hernandez. "We have been making the routine plays."
The bottom of the third was not much different for the Mustangs when they put up five runs on five hits.
Matos started the rally with a one-out single up the middle. He moved to second on a walk by Souza and both runners scored on a double by Hsieh over the right fielder's head, Hsieh taking third on a throw to the plate. Hsieh scored on a wild pitch and Ventura re-ignited the rally with a base hit up the middle. He moved to second on a base hit through the left side by Osborn. Ventura then stole third and Osborn stole second before Ventura scored on an error by the third baseman. Osborn went to third on a wild pitch and M. Schulz drove him in with a line drive to left before Lincoln got out of the inning.
Matos and M. Schulz were the big hitters of the day with three hits, a run scored and two RBIs apiece. Ventura had a double and single, scored one run and drove in two, while Souza had two base hits, scored twice and had one RBI. A. Schulz had two hits and two runs scored, while Bailey had two hits and an RBI. Hsieh had a double, a run scored and two RBIs while Osborn had one hit and two runs scored.
"We have been hitting with a lot of power this season," said Hernandez. "We have seven players who have combined for a total of nine home runs."
Earlier in the week, Pioneer bested Independence 14-1. Kaufmann smashed a home run and a double, driving in two runs in the win, while Hsieh went 2 for 4 with a double, two stolen bases and one run scored. Matos went doubled and had two RBIs, Souza went 2 for 3, A. Schulz singled and scored a run, Bailey went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored, Ventura went doubled and scored a run and M. Schulz singled and scored.
Pioneer had opened the week with an 8-2 win over Silver Creek in a make-up game for a rainout earlier in the season. Robbie Nelson went the distance to toss a 4-hitter, striking out eight along the way. He was touched for single runs in the fourth and sixth, but the Mustangs rallied for three in the third, three more in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and seventh.
Matos and Hsieh led the offensive attack for the Mustangs. Each one blasted a home run and they had three RBIs apiece.
Pioneer had a big game against Piedmont Hills on April 12 and then will go on to play Evergreen Valley at home on April 14, 3:30 p.m. The Mustangs top the Santa Teresa Division with a solid 9-0 record and Piedmont Hills sits in second place at 5-2. Pioneer is 14-5 for the year.
