With team photos, snow cones, tips from professional soccer players and the musical stylings of a steel drum band, the first day of the 2005 season for the Almaden Valley Youth Soccer League got off to a rousing start on Sept. 11 at Castillero Middle School.
The first day of the season has traditionally been a day to take team photos, as it has for the past 28 years, but for at least the past three years, the inaugural day has grown to include fundraising booths. The money goes to pay for the traveling expenses for the more competitive teams in the league. Teams sold jewelry, food and scrapbooking supplies.
"It's getting bigger and bigger every year," photo day director Lela Huenergardt said.
Approximately 2000 children in Almaden belong to the league.
Representatives from the San Jose Earthquakes were on hand to sign posters and give the young soccer players tips on passing and shooting. The professional players tested the kids on their skills and had awards available.
Huenergardt said kick-off day allows kids and parents to catch up with former teammates they haven't seen in a long time.
