Local businesses to benefit from user-friendly website
By Sarah Holcomb
The San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce is revamping its website to make it more user-friendly for both business members and consumers. The overhauled site is slated for the first quarter of 2006.

Among the improvements will be a new search engine that will allow consumers to use keywords to search the nearly 1,500 business members by category. Search results will also provide the consumer with contact information for the businesses.

The site will allow consumers to post proposal requests for services they are seeking. For example, if a consumer wants to remodel a room in her home, she will be able to post a proposal request and the chamber members whose services fit the needs of that proposal will be notified through email.

"We're trying to connect consumers with what they need and businesses to potential customers," Angela Reid, vice president of member services at the chamber, said.

A members-only area where chamber members can update their contact information and get support from other business members is another feature.

Also, neighborhood business associations, such as the Almaden Business Association and the Cambrian Business Association, will have more of a presence on the new site, Reid said.

The Chamber of Commerce site gets about 500,000 visits per month and most of the people who visit the site go to the business directory, Reid said.
