It's always good to improve and see changes in a positive direction, especially when it comes to sports. That's what the Leland girls accomplished in their volleyball match last week when Westmont came to Charger country. After dropping a very close match to Westmont in the first round of league play, the Chargers were looking forward to the opportunity to claim a victory over a Warrior team they believed they should have beaten the first time around.
When the final ball had cleared the net, the Chargers were right where they wanted and expected to be--winners of the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division match. It was once again a tightly contested affair between two good teams, but the Chargers nailed the win by taking three straight games 25-20, 25-22, 28-26.
Junior outside hitter and team captain Chaulet Scala led the offensive attack of the Chargers, pounding down 11 kills. Caryn Mohr contributed six. A strong defensive effort was put forth by captain Stephanie Kato and middle blocker Grace Chang. Both led the way in turning back the offensive attack of Westmont with 13 and 12 digs respectively.
The Chargers kept their momentum going with another 3-0 win later in the week with Overfelt being the victim this time. Leland blew past the Royals 27-25, 25-12, 25-21. G. Chang hammered 11 kills to insure that the Chargers marked up another win. The balanced attack of the Chargers saw Scala blast nine kills and Mohr eight. Vicki Chang had a hot hand at the service line, drilling six aces and Kato displayed her defensive skills again with 15 digs.
The pair of wins by the Chargers combined with a pair of losses by Westmont last week moved Leland (16-8, 7-3) into sole possession of third place in the division race. The wins also kept the Chargers in the hunt to secure a Central Coast Section playoff berth.
The Chargers also were busy last weekend competing in the Milpitas Spikefest II tournament where they claimed a ninth place finish with a 4-1 record. The only loss was at the hands of Los Altos and the Chargers racked up wins over Lynbrook, Carlmont, Valley Christian and Gunn.
Leland continued league competition earlier this week hosting Piedmont Hills and will travel to Branham on Oct. 27 in hopes of avenging another first-round loss. The Chargers close out regular season play with a trip to division leader Leigh on Nov. 1 and hosting Mt. Pleasant on Nov. 3. All matches have scheduled starts of 6 p.m.
