Chargers win in girls, boys polo; each team is 7-0 in league play
By Mike Barnhart
Both Leland water polo teams racked up two more wins last week, maintaining perfection in the Blossom Valley Athletic League's Mt. Hamilton Division and securing top seeds in next week's BVAL play-offs.

While Leland's boys were whipping Lincoln and edging Mt. Pleasant, the Lady Chargers were dumping Pioneer and Independence. Both teams entered this week with 7-0 records and just one game left prior to the league play-offs, set for Nov. 4-5 at Independence.

Back in late September, the Chargers used a 6-1 surge in the fourth quarter to dump 2004 champion Mt. Pleasant 19-10. Although Mt. Pleasant put up more of a fight on Oct. 20 than it did the first time around, the outcome was the same--a Leland win.

The Chargers' 12-9 victory over the Cardinals allowed them to take a 7-0 record into the final game on the league schedule--an Oct. 25 match-up against Pioneer. Following the Leland game, Pioneer concludes its regular season on Oct. 27 against Santa Teresa. The game is set for 5 p.m. at Independence.

Junior Raymond LaRochelle was the top scorer against Mt. Pleasant with four goals. Seniors Justin Booth and Shane Keno both scored three, and senior Jon Foote and junior Scott Stuart added one apiece.

Mt. Pleasant led 3-2 after a period, but the Chargers erupted for five goals in the second to go up 7-6 at halftime. Leland tightened its defense in the third quarter and outscored the Cardinals 3-1. The Chargers led 10-7 after three.

LaRochelle and Booth were the scoring leaders against Lincoln with four goals apiece. Keno pumped in three, sophomore Marcus Gartner, Foote and junior Max Dobrushin all had two goals. Brendan Luu, Chris Swan, Lucas Payne and Jacob Lubianker rounded out the scoring with one each.

Earlier in the week, Mt. Pleasant topped Pioneer 15-5. The Mustangs, who trailed 6-4 at the end of a high-scoring first quarter, managed just one goal the rest of the way. Scoring ace Kevin Zondervan paced Pioneer with three goals. Juniors Kirk Kaubish and Richard Gutierrez scored one each for the Mustangs, who dropped to 2-3 in league and 12-13 overall.

Leland's girls picked up their 20th win of the season with a 10-4 triumph over Pioneer.

Junior Christy Stibbe pumped in three goals. Senior Tina Revels and junior Courtney Monsees had two goals apiece. Rebecca Pele, Heather Sheridan and Courtney Gold all chipped in with one. Elysse Samson and Elizabeth Hartland both tallied two for the Mustangs.

Stibbe strong-armed five goals against Independence. She received offensive support from Revels and Elena Santamaria, who scored three apiece. Monsees, Pele, Sheridan and Gold each had one goal.

Pioneer lost another tough game later in the week, a defensive struggle to Willow Glen, 3-2. Goals by Whitney Feezor and Cara Simpson helped the Mustangs to a 2-2 deadlock at the intermission. But the Rams scored the only goal in the final two periods, and the Mustangs fell to 3-4. They hoped to end the regular season in a big way against Lincoln on Oct. 25.
