Leland girls close out perfect 12-0 Mt. Hamilton net season
By Bob Scudder
The return to dominance is complete for the Leland girls tennis team. The Chargers closed out a perfect 12-0 season last week in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League (15-1 overall) by downing both Independence and Pioneer 7-0.

Not only did the Chargers go undefeated team play, they also did not lose a single individual match in league, winning all 12 league matches with 7-0 shutouts. But that string was in jeopardy against Independence.

Roxy Pourmirzaie (No. 1), Lydia Chow (No. 2), Allison Hsia (No. 3) and Aileen Tsay (No. 4) took care of their singles matches but the Chargers were without their regular No. 1 doubles team. Vivian Ngo and Youngeun Na played in the No. 1 doubles spot and defeated a strong Independence team in straight sets. Aggi Bialy and Connie Chen moved into the No. 2 doubles spot while Yuka Kagami and Rosanna Biell played at No. 3. Both teams pulled off come-from-behind victories.

Bialy and Chen dropped the first set 4-6 and then turned things around to dominate the final two sets 6-2, 6-1 for the win. It was a tougher road for Kagami and Biell. After losing their first set, they worked hard to take the second set to a tiebreaker and then had to fight off a couple of match points to eventually win the tiebreaker. They then battled to take the decisive third set and win the match.

Finishing atop the Mt. Hamilton Division is a spot familiar to the Chargers. Six of the past seven seasons have seen Leland take the crown and five times it was with an undefeated league mark. Only 2004 provided what now looks like a temporary deviation from that pattern.

The Chargers continued their strong play in the Mt. Hamilton Division tournament. Pourmirzaie was the No. 1 seed in the singles tournament and swept her way to first place with straight set wins in the semifinals and finals. She knocked off Silver Creek 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals and claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Independence in the finals.

Chow received a No. 3 seed in the tournament but did not fare quite as well. After a second round win, she was defeated 6-1, 6-1 in her semifinal match but came back strong to dominate 6-1, 6-1 to claim third place.

Both Pourmirzaie and Chow will move on to the BVAL (Central Coast Section qualifying) singles tournament scheduled for Nov. 1-2. The winners go on to individual CCS competition.

The No. 1 doubles team during the season of Katie Alesch and Connie Wang received the No. 1 seed in the division doubles tournament. After a first-round bye, Alesch and Wang knocked off Pioneer's Giana Flores and Caroline Tran to eliminate them from the tourney. They fought their way to a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Oak Grove in the semifinals. Hsia and Tsay (No. 3 and No. 4 singles in the regular season) teamed up to represent Leland as its other doubles team entry in the tournament and received a No. 3 seed. They got past Oak Grove in round one and then defeated Pioneer's Justine Kirkeide and Nadia Berdai in round two to knock them out of the competition. They then pounded their way to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Santa Teresa in the semifinals.

That set up an all Leland final in the doubles tournament with Hsia and Tsay prevailing in a closely played match 6-4, 6-4 to claim first place. However, both teams qualified for the BVAL (CCS qualifying) doubles tournament.

BVAL team play to qualify for the CCS team tournament is scheduled for Oct. 27-28. By virtue of its first-place finish in the Mt. Hamilton Division in the regular season, Leland receives an automatic berth into the CCS team tourney and does not compete in the BVAL team playoff.

Pioneer completed its regular season with a 7-0 loss to Leland which left them with a 4-8 league mark and a fifth-place finish in the BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division.
