Resident wins press awards for excellence in journalism

Almaden Resident staff members won awards for excellence in journalism at the Peninsula Press Club's 29th annual Greater Bay Area Journalism Awards banquet.

Former editor Gregory Watkins and sports editor Dick Sparrer took home top honors in the non-daily newspaper division at an awards banquet, held June 1 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City. The awards were for stories and headlines published in 2005.

Watkins won first place for an editorial he wrote demanding that former councilwoman Pat Dando return city files that she took when she left her District 10 office at the end of her term.

Media professionals from 11 Bay Area counties submitted 578 entries, and 226 awards were presented in 90 categories.
