Fourth-graders lead pledge at Mayor Reed's breakfast
By Moryt Milo
Fourth-graders at Almaden Country School took San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed's "Green Vision" challenge to heart.
The students in art teacher Sharon Wilkus's class at Almaden Country School created pictures that portrayed environmental issues, blending art with science to create a cross-curriculum learning experience.
The mayor's challenge drew 120 entries. Ten students were selected. Six of the winners were from Almaden Country School, including Hannah Conradt, Maren Stubenvoll, Ashley Brown, Nicholas Pombo, Kelsey Morris and Marcus Rocca. The students' art addressed environmental topics that ranged from clean renewable energy to planting more trees and using low-emission lighting.
Winning students received tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, which were donated by each organization.
The winners also helped lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the Mayor's 2008 Community Breakfast and State of the City address on Jan. 16.
