Leland, Pioneer boys teams fall in quarterfinals of CCS tourney

Drew Marino and Gregg Hipwell led the Leland boys basketball team into the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs.

Marino and Hipwell each scored over 20 points in Leland's 61-53 overtime victory over Los Altos in the second round of the CCS playoffs on Feb. 21.

Hipwell put up 24 with eight from the line and six points from beyond the arc, while Marino added 20 with three free throws and a trio of threes. Cody Tyson scored six, Ryan Selness had five with a free throw and Trevor Marino, Adam Mackey and Bentli Bejan each had two.

Leland was actually trailing at the end of the first quarter, but fought back to tie the game at the half, then lost the lead at the end of the third quarter. Trailing 38-33, Leland outscored Los Altos 16-11 to tie the game at the end of regulation before the Chargers took over in overtime and took the win.

After defeating Los Altos in the second round, Leland fell to St. Francis 64-40 in the quarterfinal round with Bejan leading the scoring with nine, including five free throws. D. Marino scored eight with three at the line and a three, T. Marino added seven with a three and four free throws, both Ryan Hall and Hipwell scored five with a three, Mackey had three with a free throw, Tyson had two and Matt Vera had one at the line.

The loss ended Leland's season at 11-17 overall, while St. Francis went on to the semifinals of the playoffs to face Menlo-Atherton on Feb. 26. The winner of that contest will go on to face the winner of the Westmont-Mitty game at Santa Clara University at 8 p.m. on March 1 for the CCS Division II championship.

Pioneer's boys basketball team also took part in the CCS playoffs in Division III. Pioneer defeated Aptos 73-48 on Feb. 21 in the second round of the tournament with Nick Maggipinto leading with 29 points, including three free throws and 18 points from beyond the arc. Shawn Bundlie added 10 with a free throw and a three, Mike Beltramo had nine with a three, Will Houston had six, Nick Sarabia had five with a three and two at the line, Andrew Springer put up five with three free throws, Terrance Duncan scored four, Su Grewal had a three and Jason Berticevich had two.

Pioneer then lost to St. Ignatius in the quarterfinals 54-29 ending its season at 17-14.

St. Ignatius went on to face Sacred Heart Cathedral at Foothill College on Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that game will go on to face the winner of the Cupertino-Riordan game at Santa Clara University on Feb. 29 at 8:30 p.m. for the CCS Division III championship.
