Dunaway, Gilbert garner MVP spots on all-league soccer teams

Marissa Dunaway was the player to watch this year in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Dunaway led the Leigh girls soccer team to a second-place finish in the division with a 10-4 record by scoring 16 goals this year and adding 10 assists.

Her talents were certainly recognized by the coaches in the division who named the senior forward their Most Valuable Player on the all-league team.

Santa Teresa midfielder Jessica Ingram won the Senior of the Year award, while forward Megan Jurado of Piedmont Hills and midfielder Shannon Righetti of Pioneer were named co-Juniors of the Year.

Branham had two girls who received special awards for their play this season. Forward Shelby Salvacion received the Sophomore of the Year award, while defender Kacey Gricins was named the Freshman of the Year.

Leland head coach Jodi Washington and Leigh's Michele Kennedy received co-Coach of the Year awards.

The first all-league team consisted of Branham senior forward Michelle Haughey; Pioneer senior midfielders Sami Vesa and Bianca Springer; Evergreen Valley senior forward Caitlyn Brennan and junior midfielder Ashly Trauaglione; Piedmont Hills senior midfielder Kristina Martin Del Campo; Santa Teresa junior midfielder Heather Rose; Leland senior sweeper Karin Cavanna and senior forward Sara Chehrehsa; Leigh senior sweeper Angela Santoro, sophomore defender Emily Tregoning and senior goalie Megan Maiwald; and Del Mar senior defender and midfielder Lauren Pagendarm.

The second team included Branham senior defender Kandace Harmon; Pioneer junior sweeper Toni Sarge; Evergreen Valley senior forwards Mylesa Alexander and Ashley Vu; Pioneer sophomore keeper Allison Land; Piedmont Hills freshman defender Ashley Williamson; Santa Teresa sophomore defender Natalie Ingram; Leland sophomore forward Cristina Farrington; Leigh junior defender Jessica Man, senior defender Megan Tyrell, junior midfielder Lacey Atkinson and sophomore midfielder Allison Dugan; and Del Mar freshman midfielder Rachel Schaver.

Santa Teresa Division

Prospect's Hanna Gilbert was named the MVP in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL for her skills at forward for the Panthers this year.

Ashley Grose of Sobrato was named the Senior of the Year as a forward, while Taylor Lundquist of Willow Glen received the Junior of the Year honor as a midfielder. Lundquist scored only four goals this year, but she had nine assists, helping the Rams to a 10-2-2 league record and a second-place finish in the Santa Teresa Division.

Live Oak forward Fabiola Diaz received the Sophomore of the Year title, while Willow Glen defender Layla Cervantes was the Freshman of the Year.

Sobrato's Paul Nishimatsu won the Coach of the Year honor.

The all-league first team consisted of Live Oak senior midfielder Alayna Bongiorno and sophomore forward Diaz; Willow Glen junior midfielders Burree Cowhead and Kayla Villapando; Sobrato senior goalie Katrina Olson, freshman forward Jennae Cambra and junior midfielder Kayla Nishimatsu; Westmont junior forward Rachael Publicover; Lincoln senior goalie Melissa Martinez; Prospect junior midfielder Kristin LaForge and senior defender Nicole Peck; and Silver Creek senior sweeper Jazimin Quiroz.

The second all-league team was Live Oak senior defender Sara Locarnini and junior midfielder Amanda Whitling; Willow Glen senior defender Jessica Method and junior defender Kristen Edmunds; Sobrato junior defender Lindsay Van Kuelson, freshman midfielder Janelle Cisneros and senior defender Sara Morimoto; Westmont senior defender Lauren Smith; Prospect senior goalie Isabelle Nunes and sophomore defender Lilly Miller; and Silver Creek senior midfielder and forward Alexa Lopez.

West Valley Division

Overfelt midfielder Maria Guevara was named the MVP of the West Valley Division of the BVAL. Mt. Pleasant sweeper Kayla Goulart, received the Senior of the Year award, Independence forward and midfielder Athena Reclusado was named the Junior of the Year.

Nelly Corral, Mt. Pleasant midfielder, was the Sophomore of the Year and Oak Grove forward and defender Kelly Skelton was the Freshman of the Year.

Independence's Jaime Carnero was the Coach of the Year in the league.
