Coldwell Banker is 95 years old

Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation, with offices in Campbell at 1550 S. Blossom Ave., is 95 years old and more than 70 of its locations, including the Campbell location, are celebrating a staggering number of changes in a company that has become the biggest residential operation in the world.

"While much of the public recognizes Coldwell Banker as a national premier real estate organization, many don't realize that the company name has nothing to do with an institutional or banking origin," said Avram Goldman, Coldwell Banker Northern California president and chief operating officer. "And most also have little idea of the phenomenal number of innovations and industry effects brought about by the company."

Coldwell Banker's roots go back to San Francisco at the turn of the century, and the company was named after its founders. Some 95 years ago, a 23-year-old real estate agent named Colbert Coldwell felt the need to establish an honest real estate practice after the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire that leveled San Francisco. A few years later, salesman and agent Benjamin Arthur Banker joined the firm as a partner.

"Mr. Coldwell and Mr. Banker were either at the helm of the company or actively involved well into the 1960s and had the pleasure of watching their local, one-office California real estate firm grow into a national entity," said Goldman. "Even so, they would be astounded at the many high-tech revolutions in the company they founded. The company continues its vision of the American Dream for all Americans through its nonprofit alignment with Habitat for Humanity International, dedicated to providing housing for deserving families," notes Goldman.

In 2001, the Coldwell Banker Northern California offices raised more than $103,000 for Bay Area Habitat projects, including new homes for three families. The company's management team, as well as some 3,200 professional associates, have pledged to undertake another major fundraiser for the Habitat program this year.
