District, teachers continue talks
While most of the Campbell Union High School District took last week off, the board of trustees was still dealing with its salary negotiations with the teacher's union. Board President Margie Mitchell said the district has contacted the mediator. While she couldn't comment on what was said, fellow board member George St. Clair said, after a Feb. 13 emergency board meeting, "It was decided that we have no choice but to move to fact-finding."
St. Clair acknowledged that the mediator would be the final decision-maker on whether or not the two groups should move on to fact-finding. In fact-finding, each side chooses a representative and then an independent public employee joins the two representatives to form a three-member panel. The district and the union would then present their cases to the panel, which would discuss how to resolve the matter and then present a recommendation to both sides.
Lloyd Gillespie, a union leader and teacher at Blackford High school, said that after the mediator makes a recommendation, the two groups would normally have another negotiation session. If that session is unsuccessful, Gillespie said, the union could declare that they would go on strike within 48 hours.
The district was scheduled to discuss the negotiations in a special closed-session board meeting on Feb. 26. Those who wished to address the board beforehand were able to during an open session at 4:30 p.m.
Rusnak resigns commission seat
James Rusnak gave up his seat on the civic improvement commission on Feb. 20, citing the reason that he's moving out of town. The city council accepted his resignation.
After serving on the commission since 1997, Rusnak said his last day on the job would be Feb. 28.
Mayor Matthew Dean said a thank-you letter and a plaque would be made up for Rusnak.
Councilman Dan Furtado said he was sorry to see Rusnak leave and mentioned that he'd done a good job as chairman of the advisory committee for the library.
Early Settlers gather for reunion
The 109th anniversary meeting of the Campbell Early Settlers and Heritage reunion was held Feb. 19, at the Orchard City Banquet Hall. People who have lived in Campbell for 40 years or more attended the event, along with people who graduated from Campbell High School, descendants of Campbell pioneer families and other interested people.
