Voters approve Measures H and J

Campbell voters passed Measure H to renovate and repair 13 elementary and middle schools in the Campbell Union School District. The measure was approved by 66.9 percent of the voters, with only 33.1 percent voting against it.

The bond will raise $298 million for CUSD, allowing the district to continue improving its campuses. It will cost property owners about $29 a year per $100,000 of assessed property value.

Voters also approved Measure J by a two-thirds majority, which will raise $35 million to improve schools in the Moreland School District. Three schools--Leroy Anderson Village, Easterbrook School and Moreland Discovery School--will finally get much-needed facelifts. These schools have not been upgraded since they were built more than 35 years ago.

    Campbell will celebrate 50th

The city of Campbell will kick off the town's 50th birthday at a free community celebration on March 24, at 3 p.m. in the Orchard City Hall room at the Campbell Community Center, 1 W. Campbell Ave., building F.

At the city council meeting March 5, Mayor Jeannette Watson said the city will be showing a video chronicling Campbell's 50 years.

Local youth bands will perform at the event, and the city plans to plant a tree in honor of the city's celebration. Refreshments will also be served.

    St. Patrick's Day festival downtown

The Downtown Campbell Business Association is sponsoring a St. Patrick's Day Festival on March 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Since its inception three years ago, the festival has grown into an all-day event.

"We are anticipating a large crowd," Michael Symons, association treasurer and owner of Kensington Art Centre, said. "We are the only business association in the area that sponsors a festival of this size on St. Patrick's Day."

The festival will feature live music from five different bands, playing jazz, rock, blues and a blend of Afro-Latin music. The association also plans to have a children's activity area. There will be food booths, beer and wine.
