Prospect rallies for win over Dons

A win, a loss and a tie for Westmont baseball

    By Dick Sparrer

Del Mar appeared to have this one wrapped up.

The Dons had rallied for four runs in the home half of the sixth inning to take a 7-2 against Prospect, and they were just three outs away from recording their second win of the season in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

    But Prospect had other ideas.

The Panthers rallied for nine runs in the seventh to pull out an 11-7 win over Del Mar, pushing their league record to 2-1 and dropping the Dons to 1-2 in league play.

Kevin McPeck sparked Prospect to the come-from-behind victory. The senior slugger belted two home runs and drove in four of his club's 11 runs in the game.

But McPeck was just one of the many hitting stars for the Panthers in the win. Brad Bonvechio singled and doubled, and Brent Maselli, Ted Piggins and J.D. Mazzuca ripped two hits each for Prospect. Nick Graydon doubled home a pair of runs for the winners and Steven Vidal ripped a double.

Vidal also came on in relief to pick up the win for the Panthers. Vidal blanked the Dons in the seventh to nail down the victory.

Del Mar blasted nine hits in the game and rallied for four runs in the sixth that had seemingly put the game away, but it wasn't to be.

Robert Martinez doubled twice and singled to drive in three runs for the Dons in the game. Eric Martin singled and doubled to drive in two runs and Shaun Amelia had two hits.

The win was the second of the week for the Panthers, who had pounded out 12 hits in an 11-3 win over Independence two days earlier.

Vidal tossed a 4-hitter for the win, striking out six for the Panthers. He blanked the 76ers over the first five frames before giving up two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

It didn't matter much, though, since the Panthers had rallied for four in the first, three in the second and two in the third to take a commanding 9-0 lead after three innings.

It was Bonvechio leading the offensive attack in this one for Prospect. The junior pounded two homers and a single to drive in five runs in the win.

Tyler Jacks clubbed three hits for the Panthers and McPeck singled and doubled. Piggins also doubled in the win.

Del Mar had just the one game last week, but the Dons return to the diamond for three games this week. Del Mar was to face Overfelt on Monday and will visit Independence on March 20 and Mt. Pleasant on March 22 for a pair of 3:30 p.m. games.

In other local baseball action last week, Westmont won, lost and tied in three games last week. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the win came in a non-league game, and the loss came in Mt. Hamilton Division play against Oak Grove.

Westmont opened the week fighting Leigh to an 8-8 draw before the game was suspended because of darkness. The contest will be completed at a later date.

The Warriors lost 9-7 to Oak Grove two days later.

Things seemed to be going well for Westmont. The Warriors fell behind 1-0 in the second, but broke the game open with a five-run rally in the top of the third. Oak Grove answered right back with five in the home half of the frame, though, and went on to pull out the win.

Matt Mills doubled and singled twice to lead Westmont at the plate. Ben Peterson and Scott Stouffer each doubled and Mike Hayes drove in two runs for the Warriors.

Westmont, 1-1-1 in the division, pushed its season record up over the .500 mark to 5-4-1 with a 6-5 win over Carlmont on Saturday.

The Scots scored a run in the first and four in the second to take an early 5-0 lead, but the Warriors chipped away with two in the second, two in the fifth and two more in the home half of the seventh to win it.

Mills had another big day with three hits and Peterson singled and doubled. Reed Dickert doubled home a couple of runs, Mike Sato had two hits, Jimmy Stevenson doubled and Haynes knocked in two runs.

The Warriors face a pair of 3:30 p.m. league games this week, heading to Valley Christian on March 19 and hosting Santa Teresa on March 21.
