    Protecting the Pies

A 29-year-old driver for Campbell's Roundtable Pizza fought off three teenage assailants last week who cornered him in a parking lot and tried to steal two large pizzas.

Responding to a phone order before 8:00 p.m. on April 13, the driver carried the pizzas to an apartment at 350 Budd Avenue. When the residents denied having ordered the meal, the driver returned to the parking lot where three teenage boys were waiting for him.

The teenagers demanded that he turn over the pies.

Instead of complying, the heroic delivery man kicked his vehicle, setting off the car alarm, and fled. One hungry teen grabbed him around the neck and tried to snag the pizzas, but the Roundtable representative never let go. The three teenagers then fled the area, and the driver returned to Roundtable--with the pizzas.

Whole Foods contributes books for school libraries

School libraries in the Campbell Union School District will soon be flooded with new books courtesy of Whole Foods Market. The health food store has solicited donations from publishing houses and private donors since January, and will present $5,000 worth of books to CUSD Superintendent Marcia Plumleigh on April 12. Before the end of the year, Whole Foods community relations director Bruce Byrd hopes to raise another $7,000 for books.

Books will include classics like Curious George, Charlotte's Web and the Dr. Seuss series as well as educational texts.

"They're very upbeat, colorful and stimulating books," Byrd said, pointing to boxes in his upstairs office at Whole Foods. "It's part of our literacy support program to help upgrade the libraries at each of the schools in the district."

CUSD Superintendent Plumleigh is thrilled about this arrangement.

"Anytime we get more books into the schools it's a help," she said. "We like our children to be able to take books home, so you always have a need for more books."
