Talk of the Town
By Sarah Gaffney
Q. Holiday makers have reserved Earth Day to an annual one-day event. What do you do year-round to help save the planet? Follow-up: What's the coolest find you've unearthed from someone's trash or the side of the road?

I recycle, take public transportation and drive as little as possible. I help people in the community by taking them shopping. If I meet up with someone and they say they need to go somewhere, I'll take them. Unburied treasure? I got a table at a moving sale for like $5, but I noticed a chandelier, too. The lady threw in the chandelier because she didn't want her landlord to have it. It was with crystals on it and stuff. That was pretty cool.

Keep the car tuned up, try to drive as little as possible, and try to use public transportation. Right now I live about a mile away from work, but soon it's going to be 50 miles. I'll take the train down and cut out the final leg by using a bike. Recycled gold? This little rubber man that I found in the street three or four years ago. He's named the Wild Eyed Pistol Waver Who Ain't Afraid to Die. And he's still on my desk. He's got a gun in his hand and he points it at me.

I'm a vegan. I don't eat any dairy. I eat all organic. I reuse all of my plastic. I try not to buy any packaging. I don't drive, I ride my bike. I don't buy anything new, I buy all my clothes used. Basically, I feel the real cost of everything I use and I don't think that because we live in a society of abundance that that abundance comes without a cost. Roadside find? I got a beautiful velvet quilt last week for a dollar. It's like all autumn forest colors. It's beautiful.

What do I do to save the planet? Not as much as I should. I buy organic stuff exclusively. I do a lot of recycling. I don't use any pesticides or fertilizers. We do all organic gardening. Best trash? That's a tough one 'cause I used to do that a lot. Toys that the kids have. Lots of furniture. Many years ago I had a couch that I used for probably five years that somebody put on the side of the road to be picked up by the trash collectors.
