Del Mar's Ozan a CCS Top 8 winner
By Dick Sparrer
Carl Montgomery can breathe another deep sigh of relief.
The record Montgomery set in the 100 meters at the first Central Coast Section Top 8 Track Classic back in 1980 has survived yet another challenge.
Montgomery set the mark when he ran 10.4 in the first Top 8 meet, and though the record was tied by Tony Miller of Riordan in 1986, it had never been bettered heading into the 20th running of Top 8 Classic at Los Gatos last Friday night.
And once again Montgomery's mark withstands the test of time.
Not only was the boys 100-meter record not broken at the prestigious meet last Friday, it wasn't even threatened. And that was the case for almost all of the meet records as the CCS closes the books on the first 20 years of the Top 8 meet.
Still, even if the records were not falling, there were some outstanding performances when the best track and field athletes in the section got together at Los Gatos last week.
Ozan stars
Del Mar's D.J. Ozan was among the individual stars at the CCS Top 8 meet.
Ozan raced to an individual victory in the 800 meters in 1:56, and he was also second to Los Altos senior sensation Andrew Hill in the 1,600 meters in 4:23.0. Hill ran 4:22.3 to win the event.
Ruben Mastin and Garrett Jones joined Ozan as top placers in the meet. Mastin flew to a first-place finish in the high jump at 6-4, and Jones soared to a second-place tie in the pole vault at 14-0.
The three Dons helped Del Mar to a team fourth behind Mt. Pleasant, Los Altos and Bellarmine at the meet for the best track and field athletes in CCS.
Westmont's T.J. Aimonetti proved he belongs among the CCS best when placed in two events at the rugged meet. Aimonetti was fifth in the shot put at 51-9 and added a sixth in the discus at 132-6.
Prospect's Anne-Marie Owens and Allison Prehn starred in the girls varsity division at the Top 8.
Owens whirled the discus 112-8 to finish fifth overall, and Prehn went 15-11 in the long jump to finish sixth.
Saladin Washington placed in two events to help Prospect to a top-15 finish in the boys frosh-soph division. Washington was second in the 400 meters in 51.15 and fourth in the 200 in 23.43.
Del Mar's Dennis Bekele was 10th in the 3,200 meters in 10:27.1.
