Talk of the Town
By Sarah Gaffney
Q. Farmers market season is in bloom again. Organic produce is labeled in our grocery stores, yet there are no label requirements for bioengineered fruits and veggies. Should there be mandatory labeling for genetically altered foods? Follow-up: When you were a kid, what veggie did you hate on your plate?

I probably buy a lot of genetically altered stuff right now that I don't know about because it's not labeled. I'd be more inclined to buy organic produce if the bioengineered ones were labeled. Vile veggie? It would have to be squash. Green. My folks are British so my mother prepared it her own special way. I didn't really like it. Brussels sprouts were a pretty close second. I do eat brussels sprouts now that I appreciate what they do for you.

I'm all for genetic engineering, I just think that it's only fair that there be truth in advertising. They chemically alter food all the time. I don't think we're going to wind up with killer tomatoes running down the street. Despised dish? Beets. To this day, beets and bell peppers. My mom learned early on that those two things I would fight tooth and nail against. I would become the obstinate child. I'd become Damien.

It's truth in advertising. If you're paying more for a certain product, it should be clear as to what you're getting and what's involved in creating that product. Organic I'm familiar with, chemically altered I'm not. Gross greens? I eat everything. I was born on a little island and whatever we had we were fortunate to get. It wasn't like walking into Whole Foods and having this display that you could choose from.

I just think that advertisers in general are so nebulous in what they come out with. If there's something to talk about, let's talk about getting specific so that we know what the hell we're buying. Foul food? I was never exposed to exotic fruits as a kid. If I were, I probably wouldn't have eaten them. But I've never had a problem with any fruit or vegetable. My favorite vegetable is broccoli. I guess that makes me a little unusual.
