San Tomas Aquino Creek Cleanup Day

May 19 is National River Cleanup Day, and San Tomas Aquino Creek is one of 19 sites throughout the county where volunteer trash-removers will work this year.

"This is a really important event for us this year," said Mike DiMarco, Santa Clara Valley Water District spokesman. "The timing is excellent."

Now that the rainy season is over, he said, it is the perfect time to pick up trash and other debris that washed into the county's creeks and creek beds.

The water district and several other local public and private agencies team together as the Creek Connections Action Group for this national cleanup event, as well as the coastal cleanup day, which DiMarco said is scheduled for Sept. 15, this year.

Volunteers at the Campbell site should meet at 9 a.m. at Westmont High School (4805 Westmont Ave.) at the bridge near the baseball field. They should wear long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves and sunscreen, DiMarco said. Bags and light refreshments will be provided. For more information call Gerry Uenaka at 408.265.2607, ext. 2237 or visit www.cleanacreek.org and click on the National Cleanup Day link.

Historical board to sip tea, take walk

The public is invited to attend the Historical Preservation Board's 14th annual tea, planned for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on May 16, at Campbell's water tower on S. First Street. This year the board is putting a spin on the activity and taking the participants for a walk, too.

City planner Kristi Bascom says she's expecting about 70 people to show up for the event, during which four docents will take people on a walking tour of historic downtown Campbell.

Post Office food drive is May 12

The Letter Carriers Annual Food Drive will be held on May 12, all over Santa Clara County and the nation. To donate, place nonperishable food items by a mailbox. Letter carriers will pick up the food items and deliver them to a local community food bank or pantry. Carriers in all 50 states volunteer their time, effort and money to make the food drive a success each year. Call 408.694.0041 for more information.
