What safeguards do police use when they respond to schools?

I just read your interesting article about campus violence ('Police inform CUSD officials about tactics for handling school shooter,' May 2) and I agreed basically with what Police Chief Dave Gullo said about using more aggressive tactics in dealing with an armed school perpetrator, but what bothers me is just how a responding police SWAT team is to prevent the mistaken injury or death of innocent bystanders?

If the police department is going to use military tactics of pointing a firearm at any and all persons that they encounter when entering a facility on school grounds, then what is the mechanism to prevent some kind of accidental discharge of police weaponry?

I believe that our local police department should assure parents the soundness of their aggressive tactics, given the mistakes made by law enforcement agencies with past school shooting incidents that have occurred throughout the United States.
