LZ camera store to close its shutters

    By Sarah Gaffney

The only camera I've ever owned, a Minolta XG-M, I bought 18 years ago at LZ Premiums Super Discount, when the appliance/camera store was located at its former home on Saratoga Avenue. Five years ago, the family-owned business moved to its current downtown location at 241 E. Campbell Ave., a spot it will vacate in July.

Owners Dana and Laurie Doss felt the time was right to retire and spend more time with their high school-age kids. Plus, the stress of retailing in Silicon Valley had gotten to the independent business owners.

"We're burnt at retail," says Laurie, who has been behind the counter at LZ for the past 22 years. "People are no longer nice."

Laurie is quick to add that she understands the stress of high-pace living (she and her family are relocating to the calm of the Central Valley), and is still fond of the time she spent as a business owner in Campbell.

"This is the only place I know within a 100-mile radius where people say hi to you on the street," says Laurie. "We've had many, many customers over the years that have been wonderful."

The Dosses anticipate one more month of business before closing their doors for good. Their retail space will be divided into two shops, one selling glassware and hand-carved marble pieces and the other one a candle shop.

For the next month, LZ Premiums is having a farewell sale with 10 percent to 50 percent off all merchandise, including digital cameras and major appliances. Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For information, call 408.374.3838.

Gardening buffs are in full force now that the skies are blue and the soil is warm. Saturdays at Woolworth Garden Nursery at 2460 Winchester Blvd. are now like sales day at the mall. Gardeners are stocking up on summer vegetables, blooming flowers and potting soil. And for people passionate about orchids, the nursery has an impressive collection of the exotic plants. Store hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Call 408.866.0171.
