Talk of the Town
By Sarah Gaffney
Q. This weekend, Campbell kicks off the summer festival season with the 21st annual PruneFestival. What are your plans for summer fun? Follow-up: During the summer of 1905, a penny-pinching grower imported 500 Panamanian monkeys into the valley to pick his prunes. What was your most memorable summer job?
(Asked at the Delta Queen Classic Car Wash.)

A lot of time at the pool and the neighborhood cabana. We always go to Tahoe for a week with the kids. We rent a cabin and mostly hang out at the beach where the kids play in the water. And we go out to lots of dinners. Hot job? On Catalina Island, I soft-served ice creams for people who got off the boat. I was 14. My older sister was a singer in one of the bars. I met John Wayne and went on his yacht.

We do a lot of boating. Most of our activities will be with the boat in Santa Cruz, and up to British Columbia for probably four to five weeks. We're having a new boat built right now ... an Ocean Flight II. Seasonal Earnings? Up near Boulder Creek, there was a little place called Rice's Junction. I guess I was about 10 or 12 at the time and the people there asked if I could stay and pump gas for a couple of weeks before school opened.

I'm going to Munich for a month with my children. That's where I'm from. We're also going to Southern California 'cause we used to live there. We'll rent a little apartment by the beach in Laguna Beach where we lived. Summer side gig? I worked at a factory right before going to university. For me it was so interesting to meet with people who did this as a daily job, working on an assembly line. Their idea of life was so different.

Probably go to Tennessee for a horse show with my boss. I travel with my boss everywhere. I'm his butler, chauffeur, driver, bodyguard. I'll drive him to all the different horse shows in Tennessee. Memorable money? Hanging around with Ronnie Lott for a couple of weeks. I had a limousine service about 16 years ago. He'd call me up and ask me to take him to different parts of San Francisco. I'd go everywhere with him and Dwight Clark.
