Bob Lowry named as assistant supe at CUHSD

Bob Lowry has been named assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction at the Campbell Union High School District. The appointment becomes effective July 1, 2000.

The position had remained vacant since the autumn of 1998, following the resignation of Dan Moirao. CUHSD superintendent Rhonda Farber acknowledged that there was a need to fill the void.

"Curriculum is critical to our job," Farber said. "We need to have a person who is dedicated to that job specifically."

Lowry has worked in education in the Santa Clara Valley for 30 years, six of them as assistant superintendent of educational services in the Sunnyvale School District. Before holding that position, Lowry was principal of Fisher Middle School in the Los Gatos School District. He has also served as an elementary school principal, curriculum coordinator, a reading specialist and a seventh-grade teacher in the Alum Rock School District. Lowry's duties for CUHSD include working with teachers and staff on standards, development and accountability.

Donations sought for remote schools in Philippines

Kids can rumble in The Jungle for free if they can muster old school textbooks to support a Third World country. The Jungle, at El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center at Campbell and Saratoga avenues, is helping to collect children's story books, crayons, pencils, National Geographic magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias, math books and typewriters, among other things, to donate to remote public schools in the Philippines. The Jungle will provide one free admission for children 12 and under for every bag of items donated to the Books for the Barrios project. The event takes place Monday, May 22, and Tuesday, May 23. The Jungle is also accepting school or office supplies, toys, games, puzzles, baseball gloves and equipment, and clean children's summer clothing, including dresses for little girls.
