    Talk of the Town

    By Sarah Gaffney

    Q. The Million Mom March descended on Washington this past Sunday. Do you think our country needs stricter gun control laws? Follow-up: If you were a lawmaker, what kinds of laws would you lobby for?

I don't think there's any legal reason for people to own handguns and semi-automatic weapons. Those types of guns are meant for shooting people. It seems too easy to buy and own guns in our society. When the constitution was first written, there may have been a need to bear arms, but not today. Your law? Tougher immigration laws as a means of curbing population growth. Maybe if we put a cap on the number of people moving to the Bay Area, housing prices wouldn't be so high.

People shouldn't have guns 'cause sometimes little kids can find them and take them to school. On TV sometimes they talk about kids shooting each other at school and dying. Sometimes it makes me scared to go to school. Mr. Legislator? I think they should let us take our Pokémon toys to school sometimes so we can play at recess. At my school, it's against the law to bring your Pokémon stuff 'cause the teachers always take them away.

There's no reason for people to own guns nowadays unless you're a hunter. I don't see what the NRA has against child safety triggers, it's a little thing gun manufacturers can do that would probably save thousands of lives. There should be laws enacted that would make it harder to purchase guns. A new rule? I think it should be tougher for people to drive if they're over 75. It's a fact, your body slows down as you age; maybe you shouldn't be operating heavy machinery.

This whole gun thing is awful. When six-year-olds start shooting each other at school, I think it's a sign that we have a problem. I think the constitution needs to be amended. We live in a safe democracy. There's no reason for people to be stockpiling munitions in their homes. Lynn's law? In California, we need to transform the educational system. Public school teachers in California are paid ridiculous sums of money to perform a very important job.
