    Talk of the Town

    By Jacqi Bowe

    Q. The City of Campbell voted July 5 to join seven other South Bay cities in establishing a Joint Powers Authority that will create a new animal shelter. What do you feel is the responsibility of our community take care of animals? Follow-up: What do you think is a fair neutering and spaying price?

(Asked at the PruneYard and downtown)

I definitely don't think [neutering and spaying] should be mandatory. If they make it a law it sanctions who controls breeding. Let nature take its course. How much? I don't think people should pay because it's actually a benefit for everybody. Or make it five dollars.

Feral cats are everywhere. People feed them but they're out of control. People bring cat food to work, and they feed them behind the businesses. I had [a feral cat] once that my roommate brought home. You'd be walking down the hall and then, growl, and out came its claws. Fee for felines? $15 to $20 is affordable. Anybody can pay that.

We do need a shelter. It would be better if it is a small version of the San Jose one. But that of course takes money. But I think, we as communities, have enough money to do that. It just needs to be allocated. I think there are people who would love to go to a smaller shelter and choose an animal. I went to look for a lost pet and it's very overwhelming. You feel like you're lost in the shuffle- like when you go in a large hospital. Reasonable for Rover? Model it after what other shelters do. Or make it a little more.

Babies and animals are two priorities ... they can't take care of themselves. I think more people need to take more responsibility for their pets. We're animal lovers. We have a poodle who's just like our child. Fido's price? I think that $15 is very fair. Even if it's higher than that, it's to save the animals.
