Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game

    Moreland, Campbell are winning

    By Dick Sparrer

Scott Skinner and Chris Sedrick locked up in a pitchers duel when the Moreland and Sunnyvale National all-star teams went head-to-head in a District 44 Little League game last week.

Well, it was a pitchers' duel for three innings, anyway. After that, it was all Skinner and his Moreland crew.

Moreland broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth, then went on to nail down an 8-0 win in the major division all-star game last weekend.

Skinner ended up tossing four shut-out innings to get the win, with Kurt Batinich and Robert Kanzaki each coming on to toss an inning of relief.

Batinich and Skinner led a nine-hit attack for Moreland with two hits apiece. Batinich, Scott Idiart and Michael Manrique each knocked in runs in the win.

In other early round major division action, Campbell's all-stars opened with back-to-back wins over Santa Clara Westside and Santa Clara Briarwood-El Camino to advance to the semifinals of the winner's bracket against Santa Clara Homestead.

Moreland was to face Sunnyvale Metro on July 12, with Campbell and Homestead meeting at the same time. The two winners collide on July 16, 5:30 p.m., in the finals of the winner's bracket at the Campbell Little League field on Hamilton Avenue between Winchester and San Tomas Expressway.

In the 9-10 age division, Campbell opened tournament play with a 9-6 victory over Mountain View.

Over in Little League District 12, the Quito 10-year-old all-stars are very much alive in tournament play. Quito opened with wins over Lincoln Glen and Branham Hills, and battled Almaden on Saturday, with the winner moving into the winner's bracket finals against Saratoga on July 15, 5:30 p.m., at the Los Gatos Little League field on Blossom Hill School on Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos.
