Campbell's own iMedia Networks webcast DNC

Company was founded six months ago by Campbell resident

    By Jeff Kearns

On its website, iMedia Networks claims that it can handle events of any size and broadcast them around the world. It might sound like a boast, but the Campbell-based company recently pulled it off with a webcast of the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.

"We got a call from eMedia News, a portal for the press, and they wanted to do a webcast plus a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff," says founder Michael Lindsay, a longtime Campbell resident. "The DNC was challenging, but we want to do those kinds of things to showcase the tech we've got, and we got reports from all over the country that the streaming quality was really exceptional."

It was a big feather in the collective cap of the company's 18 employees. The only other large-scale event they'd broadcast before that was the International Web Page Awards.

Lindsay says they were also scheduled to do a live interview with President Bill Clinton, but it never happened because of a last-minute schedule change. Lindsay says the interview may still happen at a later date.

Almost all of the company's employees work out of the offices on Bascom Avenue, but one manages the iMedia's server farm at a remote location in Sunnyvale.

Most of what iMedia broadcasts on the web isn't for mass audiences: mostly, they use their system of leased high-speed lines for clients who need video-on-demand, but they also broadcast a handful of radio stations.

The company recently hired a new chairman, Jim Pappas, a 17-year veteran of the telecommunications industry.

iMedia was formed in February and started doing business in April. They recently opened an office in Miami and are planning to open offices soon in New York, Chicago and Texas.

After starting out with $2 million in seed money, Lindsay says the company is now looking for a second round of funding to help it expand by buying other companies.

But whatever happens, Lindsay says he's planning to keep the company headquartered in Campbell.
