City picks design for train stations

The City Council has voted unanimously to support one of three conceptual design plans that will be a standard for the Vasona Corridor Light Rail stations planned at Hamilton, downtown and Winchester.

Option C features a mix of brick and glass elements, with an adjacent brick semicircle of mixed foliage. Staff also wanted to incorporate a historical marker with reference to the historic downtown train depot; uniform racks for periodicals; and a community information kiosk.

The comments, along with those from the Downtown Committee, the Planning Commission and the Historic Preservation Board, will be forwarded to the Valley Transportation Authority.

    Westmont band takes trophies

The Westmont High School Marching Band will cap a successful season with a performance in the Los Gatos Christmas Parade on Sat., Dec. 4.

Led by teacher Matthew Seik, the 60-member band also played at the Saratoga Founder's Day Parade on Oct. 3, then won second place in the Emerald Regime Invitational at San Jose State University on Oct. 16.

The band's routine, set to music from Cirque de Soleil, also garnered first place in the Clayton Valley Invitational, the Gilroy High School field competition and the Music and Effect category; second place in the field show competition at Logan High School; and a special trophy for Best Marching in its division.

Members of the band include drum major Carli French; color guard captain Olyvia Jin; and performance soloists Kate Worth on flute, Raul Renteria and Nguyen Pham on the mellophone. The band also made history for Westmont on Oct. 30 by marching down Campbell Avenue in the city's first high-school homecoming parade.

Rep. Campbell to try for Senate seat

After months of speculation, Campbell's Republican Rep. Tom Campbell announced his campaign to win the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Dianne Feinstein. The race could pit Campbell against Feinstein, but Campbell first must face Ron Unz and other Republican candidates in the primary.

This campaign is Campbell's second attempt to win a U.S. Senate seat. The candidate, who was elected to the House of Representatives in 1989, lost the Republican U.S. Senate primary in 1992.
