Talk of the Town
By Sarah Gaffney
Q. Q. The 1990s will soon be ending. If you had to name the decade, what would you name it? Follow-up: If you could live at any time during the past century, when would it be?

Something about the Internet ... the Computer Era or the Age of High Tech. Time travel? The Roaring '20s, definitely. It seems like a time when the constraints of the latter part of the century didn't exist. It was kind of like the '60s, but the '20s were much more lighthearted. It was the only time during this century where there was actually prosperity and lightheartedness all at the same time.

The Me Decade. I think people are more interested in progressing themselves rather than looking at the big picture. It's a "take care of me" kind of thing. There's more emphasis on material things rather than basic needs. Past life? The '50s. It was a time of wonder and time when technology was growing. The economy was great. ...We're seeing the same thing now, but it's more commonplace.

The Get Rich Quick Decade. When you consider the amount of million dollar homes that are selling in this Valley, the disparity between rich and poor is growing at such a fast rate. Terrific time? I always say I wasn't born a minute too soon or a minute too late. Even though we have what we have in our world, I think this is really a great time for human potential. We can do absolutely everything that we want to do. As women, we have nothing that can hold us back.

The Dot.Com Decade. Put your name in front of it and a dot.com behind it and you're a millionaire in this Valley. Best decade? I would say right now is a great time to be alive. Even though there are a lot of stresses in this Valley, I think it's a great place to live. I like the diversity and the openness of accepting other people.
