County revs up DUI prevention
At midnight on Dec. 17, Santa Clara County launches its annual Avoid the 13 program. Avoid the 13, named for the number of police agencies in the county, is chaired by Campbell Police Chief Dave Gullo. The campaign begins at the brink of the millennium and lasts until midnight on Jan. 2. It aims to crack down on drinking and driving in hopes of preventing accidents and deaths. In order to accomplish the mission, police from around the county will have special city patrols, overtime allocation, shift adjustments, sobriety checkpoints and strike teams.

Death of teacher saddens community
Students, teachers and administrators were shocked and saddened upon hearing the news of the death of a beloved elementary school teacher.
Laurie Lundgren, a fourth-grade teacher at Easterbrook school in the Moreland School District, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head when firefighters responded to her residence Dec. 4.
On Dec. 9, San Jose police positively identified the bodies of Lundgren and her half-brother Jeb Alison, who police believe shot her and then set fire to the three-bedroom rental home they shared at 1357 Hester Ave. in West San Jose. Three years ago, Alison was reunited with his 29-year-old half-sister, who had been adopted by a family in San Jose. Alison, 24, had moved to San Jose from Montana to live with Laurie.
MSD's official statement regarding Lundgren, who was employed in the district for four years, read in part: "[Lundgren] was known for her personal exuberance, energy and love of teaching. She will be deeply missed by her students and colleagues as well as the Moreland community."
