Dons off to perfect start

To say it's been a good start this winter for the Del Mar boys basketball team would be something of understatement. You see, the Dons have been perfect.
Del Mar is off to a hot 6-0 start in the 2000-01 season, and the Dons will carry that mark into a pair of 7 p.m. games this week. Del Mar visits Valley Christian on Dec. 19 before heading to Willow Glen on Dec. 21.
The Dons pushed their current winning streak to six games last week with lopsided victories over Yerba Buena and Branham.
Steve White poured in 19 points to top a list of 11 Del Mar players who scored in the easy win over the Warriors. Steve Belton also finished in twin figures with 10 points.
Jason Campbell had a three among his seven points and Ryan Lagod had a pair of threes to finish with six points. Jeremy Beene and Rodney Gattis added six points apiece, John Lee had five, Kyle Kelly and Miralem Mujkic four each, Matt Dompe hit a three and Daniel Dixon had two.
The Dons had an easy time later in the week, rolling to a 50-point win over Branham.
Lagod and White shared the team lead with 14 points apiece in the 73-23 victory. Lagod hit three three-pointers for the Dons. Gattis also finished in double digits with 10 points.
Stephen Giles hit a couple of threes to finish with six points and Belton also hit six points. Beene and Kelly added five apiece, Dompe had four, Dixon, Lee and Mujkic hit two each and Neil Robles had one.
Westmont wins
The Westmont boys pushed their season record to 5-2 with a 65-42 nonleague win over Carlmont last week.
Brandon Sligh poured in 21 points to lead the Warriors to the lopsided victory. The 6-foot-4 transfer tossed in eight buckets from the floor and added five points a the free-throw line.Westmont outscored Carlmont in every period but the fourth, including a 19-10 run in the second quarter and a 21-10 cushion in the third.
Warriors win two
The Westmont girls, meanwhile, posted a pair of easy wins last week. The Warriors rolled past Los Gatos 43-30 in a nonleague game, then after opening the Half Moon Bay Tournament with a 56-52 loss to Aragon, they pounded Sequoia 61-19.
Senior guard Mia Simmons buried 16 points to lead the Warriors to the 13-point win over the Wildcats to open the week. Jennifer Brownridge had a three among her 12 points and Jennifer Brown added 10 points. Shannon Stenzel rounded out the scoring with five points.
Westmont jumped out to a quick 10-point lead in the first period, outscoring the Cats 14-4, and held that cushion throughout the night. The Warriors led by 11 at intermission and by nine heading into the fourth before outscoring Gatos 16-12 in the final quarter to clinch the win.
Simmons came back with 19 points and Brownridge hit 15, but the Warriors lost 56-52 to Aragon in the first round of the tournament. Brown supported with 10 points and Stenzel and Shantale Higginson had four apiece.
Simmons drilled 14 points, Brownridge had 13 and Brown hit 12 in the 61-19 win over Sequoia. Stenzel and Carly Brownridge supported with six points apiece, Higginson and Jennifer Chaney had four each and Heather Rasmussen had two.
Westmont opened up a commanding 24-3 lead in the first period and never looked back.
McGill leads Dons
Morgan McGill tossed in 61 points in three games, but the Del Mar girls basketball team could win just two of the three.
The Dons, now 5-1 for the year, opened the week with a 56-49 win over Notre Dame-San Jose. McGill bombed 26 points to lead Del Mar to the victory. Kim Mollet supported with 14 points in the win.
McGill came back with 12 points and Mollet added 10, but the Dons lost 53-28 to Leland. McGill had a 23-point night in a tight 45-44 victory over Andrew Hill.
