Campbell Golden State Scholars
Although it was not required, 278 seventh- and eighth-graders in the Campbell Union School District opted to take the rigorous Golden State Examination's first year algebra test, and more than half scored in the top ranks. The Golden State Exam (GSE) is a challenging test in key academic subjects, developed for high school students. Recent statewide efforts to boost student performance include new academic content standards in which schools introduce algebra in eighth grade and the new high school exit exam that measures math performance as a graduation requirement. As part of its focus on student achievement and academic standards, Campbell Union School District has offered a full-year course in algebra to its eighth-graders for about 15 years and encouraged students to participate in the GSE. Recently, Campbell Union School District began offering algebra to seventh-graders, as well.
