Campbell PD to reward drivers
Getting pulled over in Campbell could be a lot more fun than you'd expect.
The Campbell Police Department will reward safe and courteous drivers through its annual Holiday Good Driver Citation Program, which began two weeks ago and will last through New Year's Day.
"It's a good, positive way of encouraging good driving habits," said Campbell Officer Tom Rogers with the traffic services unit. "If we see someone go out of their way to be polite, we'll say thank you."
Motorists who demonstrate good driving behavior, such as stopping for pedestrians, being courteous to other drivers or remaining cautious in hazardous situations may be flagged down by an officer without red lights or siren. The driver will be given two free tickets to this year's sponsoring merchant, the Plaza Four Theaters in the Campbell Plaza Shopping Center.
Officer Rogers said the department has about 100 citations to give out this holiday season, the 10th year of the program.
He said good drivers are often surprised to be pulled over, but when they realize they didn't do anything wrong, "they brighten up really quick."
Avoid the 13 effort starts in South Bay
Bay Area law enforcement agencies are serious when they say, "Don't drink and drive."
On Dec. 15, 84 law enforcement agencies in the Bay Area, including the Campbell Police Department, ran 10 sobriety checkpoints to kick off a 19-day crackdown on the holiday's intoxicated drivers.
The effort to prevent drunk driving accidents and death will include a total of 28 checkpoints in Santa Clara, Alameda, San Mateo and Contra Costa counties. Teams of multi-agency police officers will conduct 11 nights of regional patrol. CHP officers will conduct intense patrol of the area's highways from Dec. 22 to Dec. 26, and from Dec. 29 to Jan. 1. In addition, departmental officers will be working additional overtime hours.
Law enforcement officials anticipate arresting about 2,000 DUI suspects.
