Commission study session leads to condo revision On May 13 the Campbell Planning Commission held a study session to review the revised plans for construction of a development at 117 Gilman Ave., the former site of the Campbell Trailer Court. The developer, Core Builders, has redesigned the project, reducing the number of townhouses from 29 to 20 and eliminating all the underground parking. The revised development has also relocated the driveway entrance to Gilman Avenue. The old design had the driveway on the corner of Gilman Avenue and Sam Cava Lane, which many of the area businesses said was a blind curve and created safety concerns. The developer also revised the project to provide guest parking within the complex. The county parks master plan to be presented June 5 The Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Commission is presenting a Los Gatos Creek County Park master plan draft on June 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Campbell City Hall council chambers, located at 70 N. First Street. The key elements of the plan are widening the Los Gatos Creek County Trail, adding new plantings and rehabilitating portions of the riparian zones. A new off-leash dog park and reconfigured parking are also proposed. The public is invited to review the master plan. Traffic island to be removed The Campbell City Council on May 21 approved the removal of a traffic island located at the intersection of Curtner Avenue and McGlincy Lane. The island, part of the Campbell Technology Park development project, immediately generated complaints from businesses in the area after it was installed in June 2000. The island prohibited southbound left turns from McGlincy Lane onto eastbound Curtner Avenue, which caused motorists to illegally cut through businesses and make illegal left and U-turns. Campbell Traffic Engineer Matthew Jue told the council that removing the island would not create a significant increase in traffic, would eliminate illegal traffic maneuvers and would cost less than $10,000, which can be included in the current budget. In other news, the Campbell City Council approved a salary increase for council members from $510 per month to $535 per month. This increase will become effective in January 2003. The approved 5 percent salary increase is based on California state law and will add $765 of additional costs to the 2002-03 fiscal year budget. CUSD names its teacher of the year The Campbell Union School District announced on May 23 that Judy Machado, sixth-grade teacher at Rolling Hills Middle School, is the district's 2002-03 teacher of the year. Machado has taught at Rolling Hills for 22 years. Her peers described her "as the best of the best" when they nominated her for the award. Governing board vice president Susan Mayer said Machado exemplifies the best qualities of teaching through dedication to her students and her willingness to mentor the students she teaches. In other news, the governing board also recognized Karen Kane-Foempe as the Association of California School Administrators volunteer of the year for the district. City needs designer for theater frontage The Heritage Theatre is putting out a call to professional and emerging artists and design teams interested in contracting with the city of Campbell to design the frontage of the theater, utilizing landscape, hardscape and a marquee. A selection panel will evaluate all candidate slides/jpgs and supporting material. Five candidates will be selected for interviews, and a final candidate will be awarded the project. Submit applications to Zarka Popovic, City of Campbell, Public Works, 70 N. First St., Campbell 95008, or email zarka@cityofcampbell.com. The application deadline is June 14, 5 p.m. PG&E offers incentives to save power PG&E is offering its residential customers an opportunity to receive a 20 percent rebate on their electric bills for summer and fall. Gov. Gray Davis is promoting the incentive - called the California 20/20 Rebate Program - to reward residential customers for reducing electric use, which assists in preventing rotating outages. Customers who use 20 percent less electricity as compared to 2000 usage data will earn the rebate. Residents who are not in the same location as in 2000 will have their electric usage compared against the baseline allocation for their area. These incentives are similar to last year's plan, which issued $120 million in rebates to both residential and nonresidential customers. For more information, visit www.pge.com/foryourhome. The Retirement Inn plays host to children's author Children's author Gerard Jones will do a book signing June 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Retirement Inn of Campbell, 290 N. San Tomas Aquino. A retirement community may seem like an unlikely venue for a noted children's author, but not so strange given that the author's father is a resident of the Retirement Inn of Campbell. The afternoon is billed as a Family Fun Day, and staff is planning an intergenerational program of food, fun and prizes. Jones, a San Francisco resident, will be signing his most recent books, Killing Monsters and Picachu Meets the Press. For more information, call 408-378-2535. |
