Adoptable pets visit PetsMart Luv-a-Pet By Michelle C. Crowe Companion Animal Rescue Effort, also known as C.A.R.E., has expanded its adoption hours. Potential adoptive families can now meet kittens and cats at PetsMart's Luv-a-Pet Center at 850 W. Hamilton Ave. on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., in addition to the Friday evening sessions from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The nonprofit organization offers foster care for cats and kittens, dogs and puppies until suitable homes become available. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or foster parent is invited to leave a message at 408-227-2273. Just in time for graduation and summertime barbeques, Palermo Pizza Pies (a.k.a. Palermo's) now offers catering. While the cozy pub, located at 915 S. San Tomas Aquino Road near Hacienda and Westmont avenues, has remained a favorite for years with its San Tomas area neighbors, the catering move represents a big branching out in terms of both menu offerings and business opportunities for the locally owned pizzeria, says owner Nikos Kamenis (Nick to his patrons). The restaurant's menu offers an exotic cuisine, ranging from Italian to Greek, that is representative of Kamenis' own ethnic roots - he is the son of a Sicilian mother and Greek father. (Palermo's was offering feta cheese, pesto and artichokes on its pizzas way before those items became trendy.) In another part of Campbell ... are taco wars ahead? While most locally owned businesses would fear the arrival of a competing franchise operator nearby, longtime favorite Taco Bravo at S. Bascom and Campbell avenues appears to remain popular, even with the recent addition of Baja Fresh next door. With the acquisition of the Baja Fresh chain by the large Wendy's franchise, it's anyone's guess if things will change in terms of menu. For now, the crowds at both seem to remain equal until 9 p.m., when Baja Fresh closes. Bay Area expatriates as far away as Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Texas are all known to make Taco Bravo their first food stop upon returning. As one of the few legitimate "real food real cheap" places open late (usually until 3 a.m.), it looks like the late-night partying crowd can rely on Taco Bravo. Got a local business news tip?
