The football was a little slippery on Friday afternoon—and Westmont linebacker Jacob Goytia is happy that it was.
The ball was so slippery that the Andrew Hill Falcons were having trouble holding onto it. And when they dropped it in the third quarter, Goytia was there to scoop it up and race 25 yards for a Westmont touchdown.
It was one of two touchdowns for Goytia on Friday as the Warriors rolled to a 20-0 win over the Falcons.
The win helped the Warriors improve to 3-2 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with one game left to play. Westmont, 6-3 for the year, will host first-place Silver Creek on Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m. The Raiders are 5-0 in the division and 8-1 for the season.
Westmont and Hill played a tight first half. The only touchdown came in the second quarter, when talented senior quarterback Bryen Blankenship raced 16 yards for a score. Amin Jahini kicked the extra point, and the Warriors were up 7-0 at intermission.
But Goytia took over in the second half. The senior 'backer scored on the fumble return in the third period, then scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth. Jahini converted after the first Goytia score, and the Warriors were on their way to a victory.
Mike Jiosa had a big night for Westmont in the win. The senior running back proved to be a real mudder for the Warriors, rushing for more than 150 yards.
Dons fall 48-6
In another division game, Del Mar lost 48-6 to Silver Creek. The Dons slipped to 0-5 in league play and to 0-9 for the year. They close out the season on Friday at Leland, 1:15 p.m. The Chargers are 3-2 in the division and 4-5 for the season following a 27-0 loss to Independence last week.
Del Mar managed to avoid a shutout against the Raiders on Saturday with a third-quarter touchdown. Senior quarterback Patrick Myers pitched a 29-yard scoring toss to junior wide receiver Chris Little.
Panthers lose 36-7
Prospect faced a league bye last week, but filled it with a non-league game against Mt. Hamilton Division title contender Piedmont Hills. The Panthers lost 36-7 to the Pirates.
Piedmont Hills improved to 9-0 this year with the victory. The Pirates will play Oak Grove for the division championship on Friday.
Prospect, meanwhile, dropped to 2-7 for the year with the loss. The Panthers will close out the season on Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m., against Hill at San Jose's PAL Stadium.
Prospect averted a shutout loss to Piedmont Hills with a fourth-quarter touchdown. Ivan Biondic scooped up a fumble and rambled 45 yards to the Piedmont 6-yard line. After a 5-yard run by Steven Kong, Jeremy Nuia blasted over for the score. Garrett Karren's kick made it 36-7, and that's how things ended up.
"The field conditions were horrendous," said Prospect coach Mike Carrozzo. "But it was still a hard-hitting game. Considering the loose footing, the kids were hitting hard."
The coach said that Nuia "ran well" in the game and added that Biondic "played hard." Biondic had a 45-yard kick return to go with his 45-yard fumble return.
Linebacker Austin Baumgarten was the leading tackler for the Panthers. "He was all over the place," said Carrozzo.
The coach also praised the work of outside linebacker David McKenzie, who forced a fumble and had a couple of tackles for losses, and sophomore noseguard Daniel Jennings, who also had a couple of tackles for losses.
"We started to do some good things in the second half," added the coach, realizing it was against the Piedmont reserves. "The kids played hard—they flat out played hard."
A week earlier, the Panthers lost 34-7 to Leland. Nuia had 12 carries for 41 yards, including an 8-yard TD run, and Karren kicked an extra point.
Kong was the offensive leader for the Panthers with 80 yards on 13 carries.
Adam Day hit on 2 of 4 passes for 40 yards and Biondic completed a pass for 10. Kong had a catch for 32 yards, Nuia one for 10 and Danny Solomon one for eight.
Baumgarten and Ted Piggins shared the team lead with 10 tackles apiece. Andrew Shouse was in on eight, Trammel Staten and Karren had six each and Joey Puccinelli five. Staten had a quarterback sack and Kyilo Hulton intercepted a pass.
