California School of Art and Design will move into a portion of the space formerly occupied by the Hazelwood Elementary School.
The Campbell Planning Commission unanimously approved the request at its June 28 meeting.
The school will share space with another private school, Canyon Heights Academy, which currently leases space from the Campbell Union School District.
The art and design school will move into its new 1,720-square-foot facility on Waldo Drive in July and classes will begin on July 12, according to Young Lee, California School of Art and Design principal and owner.
The 7-year-old school is currently located on the old Blackford High School campus but needed to find a new home because Harker Academy plans to take over the entire site in the fall.
The art and design school instructs middle and high school students in the areas of industry and graphic design, design and interior architecture and fine painting. The school works with students on an advanced level helping them develop their portfolios for submission to West Coast art colleges, schools in the University of California system and private colleges. There are presently 42 students attending the school for its upcoming summer session.
Lee says students come from various Bay Area communities including Rose Garden, Cupertino, Almaden and Fremont.
In addition to Lee, who teaches design and interior architecture, the school employs two art instructors.
California School of Art and Design, 775 Waldo Dr., classes are taught Tuesday through Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The school is closed on Mondays. For more information call 408. 370.4748.
